Then from 1980 to 1990, he was Assistant Director, and from 1990 to 2002, Associate Director of the Georgia Tech Cooperative Division, the predecessor to the Division of Professional Practice.

Mr. Simmons worked with more than ten thousand co-op students studying engineering, science, and management. During those years the co-op program doubled in the number of students participating and is now one of the largest, optional co-op programs in the United States. Currently, the Cooperative Education Program numbers over 2500 students with job opportunities in more that 600 employers throughout the United States and abroad. Within this program, seven co-op advisors counsel students and work continuously to develop co-op jobs related to the curricula in which the students major.

Mr. Simmons earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from Georgia Tech. Following that degree he served as a line officer in the United States Navy for four years with engineering staff responsibilities and then three years in engineering management with the textile industry. Before returning to Georgia Tech in 1977, he earned a Master of Business Administration and then in 2000, he earned a Master of Arts in English, both degrees from Georgia State University. He also completed twenty years with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve serving at home and abroad in assignments with the Naval Control of Shipping Organization and the Military Sealift Command.

Since 1981, Mr. Simmons has been a member of the Cooperative Education Division (CED) of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), served as Chair-elect of that division in 2004, and then in 2005 served as chairman of CED, which represents over one hundred engineering co-op programs nationwide. His joint research on co-op work assignments and well-being for the co-op in the workplace has been published in the “Journal of Engineering Education.” He has served as program chairman for the Cooperative Education Division at the ASEE Conference for Industry and Education Collaboration and as 2004 Chairman for the Southeastern Regional Cooperative Education Conference. Additionally, Mr. Simmons has been very active in the Georgia Cooperative Education Network and has affiliations with other co-op organizations in the state of Georgia.

In addition to responsibilities for managing the co-op program, he is advisor to students who are “Undecided” in engineering, science, management, and liberal studies.
